Do androids dream of electric sheep?

June 29, 2012

I’m a big fan of science fiction – writing, movies, and games.

I like the ideas they raise which push at the boundaries of what we know and what we think we know.

Together they present a possible future which could only be dreamed about but which today seems more achievable than 50 years ago. Our future gets its ideas from our present, is informed by the fiction of our times.

NASA loves science fiction, often taking the ideas straight off the page and making them real. We have robots and space programs whose genesis lies within the pages of a book.

A lot of our modern games have also developed a strong relationship with science fiction writing – a quick look at the Halo franchise shows you just how strong this relationship is.

What’s your favourite science fiction story? Is it a novel, a poem,  a movie, or a game? Does this story inspire your dreams?

I love C.S. Lewis’ Cosmic Trilogy – Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. I have also enjoyed Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
